Bandarenka feels better but cannot control his leg well

His wife has visited him today.

Political prisoner Zmitser Bandarenka is recovering after an operation in the 1st neurological department of Minsk hospital #5. Doctors have told Euroradio that the removal of disk herniation conducted on July 26 was successful and the patient feels better now. Bandarenka was supposed to be sent back to colony after two weeks in hospital. However, his rehabilitation may take more time.

“His conduction is satisfactory. He will stay in hospital until the end of the week. This is how we are planning it and we will see. We will continue the treatment if necessary. It depends on us where he will be sent. It is optimal to go through rehabilitation procedures here. Then we will see”, - said doctors to Euroradio.

The political prisoner’s wife, Volha Bandarenka, visited her husband on Wednesday. According to her, Zmitser will need months to recover.
Volha Bandarenka: “Despite the fact that the strangulated nerve endings have been removed, they are in such a bad state that he will need months to recover. Fortunately, they are recovering but it is a very slow process. Now you can treat the edema and go through laser treatment. He cannot control his leg now so it is too early to say that he feels better”.
According to Volha, Zmitser did not expect to be allowed to recover in an ordinary hospital.
“Zmitser has expressed gratitude for the treatment. He is grateful because they have met his wishes as he is in a really difficult situation. However, I do not think that he will stay here for a long time”.

Meetings with the political prisoner are allowed according to the prison schedule. Three people are guard Zmitser and there is always someone near the entrance or in the ward. Volha does not bring any food with her because it would be considered as one of the 4 parcels allowed in a year.

“I showed them the things I had today, it was an ordinary meeting. They do not normally search me before such meetings; I only have to turn off my cell phone. A guard is present there anywhere and I am at a distance – I do not bring anything to Zmitser”.

Let us remind you that Zmitser Bandarenka was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment in a medium security colony for participation in the protest action on December 19. His health condition rapidly deteriorated behind bars. He underwent an operation on his spine on July 26.
