Pundit: Belarus FM sought advice in Moscow before Georgia trip

The expert reckons Belarus foreign minister Uladzimir Makei consulted with his Russian colleague Sergei Lavrov before taking off to the informal Eastern Partnership summit in Tbilisi.

Raman Yakauleuski: "I'd like to point out that Makei visited Moscow prior to this visit to Tbilisi. Official reports didn't say Georgia was on Lavrov-Makei meeting's agenda. But insiders suggest Makei literally sought advice from Lavrov whether he should travel to Tbilisi at all."

Mr Yakauleuski reminds that Minsk kept a long silence over who would represent Belarus in Tbilisi. Only after the Moscow visit it became known that Uladzimir Makei would be heading to Georgia.

The pundit also commented to Euroradio on the reports that Georgia's president Mikhail Saakashvili is to meet his Belarus counterpart Alexander Lukashenka. According to Mr Yakauleuski, this information leak is of benefit to Mikhail Saakashvili who is rapidly losing the political support base in his country.
