PACE President: Release of all political prisoners is our strict demand

Releasing all political prisoners in Belarus remains a strict demand of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. A Spanish deputy, PACE President Luis Maria de Puig claimed it in an interview with BelaPAN.
He noted that the recent release of political prisoners including two members of an unregistered organization “Malady Front” Zmitser Dashkevich and Artur Finkevich “had not gone unobserved”.  He is hoping that the release will become “a conclusive and consistent sign of the Belarusian authorities’ willingness to become closer to the Council of Europe”.

It is necessary to note, that Alyaksandr Lukashenka claimed that the Belarusian authorities had met the demands of the European Union and had released some political prisoners during his speech made for BSU students on February 12.

"We have met their demands: I mean the early release of some prisoners the West has a special attitude to”, - said the President.

"Their release, - he stressed, - does not acquit them, it was caused by humane reasons. We have turned over the most morbid page in the relations with the West and we are the first to suggest movement forward. Now it is European Union’s turn to show their good intentions regarding the Belarusian people”.
