Aliaksandr Lukashenka has approved the death penalty for "attempting to commit an act of terrorism". Earlier, the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus did the same. On Wednesday, the document was published on the National Legal Internet Portal. It amends the Criminal Code. The innovation will take effect in ten days.

It is assumed that the mentioned changes are introduced, among other things, for stiffer penalties for the "rail partisans," who have become active in Belarus after the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The law enforcers wounded several of them during the detentions.

On May 18, the high-profile trial of Mikalai Autukhovich and a group of 11 people will begin. Some of them have been charged under the "act of terrorism" article.

The European Union is alarmed by possible amendments to the Criminal Code of Belarus, under which the use of the death penalty could be expanded. The Republic of Belarus is the only country in Europe where it still exists.
