Kozulin: They couldn't but let me out

Political prisoner Alexander Kozulin who challenged Alexander Lukashenka in the 2006 presidential elections in Belarus was last night released from jail in order to burry his wife Iryna. The regime hesitated, not willing to let the politician out from the colony but eventually had to give in under the pressure of the international community and a hunger strike announced by Kozulin, his daughters and friends. Alexander Kozulin said in an interview with the European Radio for Belarus:

“I think that everybody understands very well that I could not but let out. The line that was not supposed to be crossed has already been crossed.

Kozulin has been released for three days. Yesterday in the evening, he was summoned to the colony's commander and told to sign a paper wherein he was warned about criminal prosecution if he would not report back to the colony after three days expire. Kozulin was driven to his apartment in Minsk by Vital Agnistsikau, the commander of the colony.

Is there a hope for a full release of Alexander Kozulin. He said in this regard:

“This is noy just Kozulin's issue. This is already a civilization issue of whether the dark essence of Mr Lukashenka has at least a drop of light. If he has this light, I will be freed. If he doesn't, I will not be freed. Actualy, I have always felt myself free, even behind bars. There are a lot of people at freedom who are in fact slaves. They are now behind bars of their souls…

Therefore, if they don't free me, I have already stated that I do not obey this criminal regime and will immediately announce a hunger strike. I will be either free or there will be different issues…”.

The funeral service for Iryna Kozulina will take place today in the Red Cathedral. It is scheduled for 2000. The burrial will take place on February 27.
