Unique Belarusian translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin found after 80 years

Ганна Севярынец знайшла пераклад "Яўгенія Анегіна", зроблены Алесем Дударом

Hanna Sevyarynets, a Smalyavichy grammar school teacher and a researcher of the Belarusian literature has discovered a full translation of Puskhin’s novel Eugene Onegin. The novel was translated into Belarusian by poet Ales Dudar who was executed along other prominent Belarusian literary men during Stalin's purges in 1937.

"A full handwritten translation of Eugene Onegin made by Ales Dudar before his last arrest in 1936 has been found. Manuscripts don't burn. I am crying,” Sevyarynets wrote on Facebook.

The translation was probably dated for the 100th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin’s death marked in 1937.

The only previously known Belarusian translation was made by Belarusian poet Arkadz Kulyashou in 1949.
