Grybauskaitė: Safety at Astravets NPP is EU’s concern

Грыбаўскайтэ: Бяспека Астравецкай АЭС — гэта клопат усяго ЕС

The safety at Astravets NPP is the whole European Union’s concern, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė told European Commissioner for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič .  “We all remember the tragedy in Chernobyl,” Grybauskaitė’s press service quotes the President. “Nuclear power stations not corresponding to international standards are dangerous for all Europeans. That is why the EU and all the international community should demand that Astravets NPP observed the strictest international safety standards. We need a transparent and independent environmental impact assessment combined with risk and safety evaluation”.

Lithuania is worried about Belarus’ statements about the cheapest NPP construction in the world, Dalia Grybauskaitė noted. The EU should assess the possibilities and potential instruments of restricting the import of the energy produced at Astravets NPP to Europe, the Lithuanian President believes.

Astravets NPP should not create additional obstacles to the energy production in the country and to the synchronization of Baltic energy networks with central European networks, Grybauskaitė noted.

The first power unit of the Belarusian NPP is expected to be finished in 2018 and the second one – in 2020, Euroradio reported earlier.
