"Gazprom" may bring down gas prices for Belarus in six months
The Belarusian Internet was agitated by the information about the increase of gas prices for Belarus to 250 dollars. People referred to a press release of “Gazprom”. However, the economic crisis has resulted in a drop in the oil prices. We addressed the question “Whether we should expect and increase or a decrease in gas prices for Belarus?” to the head of the board of directors of “Gazprom” Sergei Kupriyanov. “We are expecting a drop in prices but a bit later. We have a temporary gas price formation schedule for 6 or 9 months”, - said Kupriyanau.
The press release contained no information about certain gas prices for Belarus, said Sergei Kupriyanov in an interview with ERB:
“There are no terms, nothing. We are going to bring domestic gas prices to match European ones. This process will influence all former Soviet republics: Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. The press release does not announce the gas price for the next year. I can only say that we have a contract with the price formula describing the way prices should be formed for every period”.
The exact gas price would be made public at the end of the year, added Sergei Kupriyanov.
The thing is the gas price formation formula was created to correspond to oil prices with a six-month delay, explained a famous Belarusian economist Leanid Zlotnikau:
“The gas price formation formula corresponds to the oil price with a six-month delay. Our gas price can be high because of the high oil price registered several months ago. The situation may be observed in the first quarter and reconsidered in the second one like it happened a year ago. Then the price may drop”.
That is why it is very difficult to predict the gas price for Belarus at the moment.
“You know, serious analysts are refusing to make six-month forecasts due to this situation”, - said an economist Leanid Zlotnikau in an interview with ERB.
