Ex-KGB chief testifies as a witness in State Control Committee head beating case

Ex-Belarus KGB chief Stsyapan Sukharenka on November 19 testified in the case of the beating of Zyanon Lomats, the influential chairman of the State Control Committee.

The trial, which opened on November 5, is taking place behind the closed doors. Three KGB officers and one officer from the Security Council are charged with office abuse and could get up to seven years in prison , if convicted, reports Radio Svaboda.

The name of one of the defendants is Arlouski. The names of the rest have not been revealed. Lomats testified in court on November 14. 

He was beaten in a Mahilyou hotel last July.

Several days after the incident, Alexander Lukashenka sacked the chairman of the Belarusian KGB, Stsyapan Sukharenka and his first deputy Vasil Dzemyantsey.
