European Commission to discuss Belarus on April 13

The deputy head of the EU delegation in Belarus Janis Aizsalnieks has claimed that Belarus’ progress in the issue of mass media freedom is evident. The European Commission sees the Belarusian progress in five directions and has decided to assess its steps again on April 13. He claimed it at a round-table discussion about mass media legislation in Minsk. The EU official explained that the assessment of the steps made by Belarus could play an important role in the issue of lifting the sanctions the European Commission had imposed on Belarus.

The representative of the European Commission noted that the printing and distribution of “Nasha Niva” and “Narodnaya Volya” were important steps made for the progress. He noted that the newspapers were available for subscription and could be bought easily.

At the same time, he said that the European Commission was worried about the problems of the other editions that could not be distributed by “Belsayzdruk” and the problem of accreditation of foreign mass media.
