Euobserver: EU to lift most Belarus sanctions

Euobserver: ЕС вырашыў не працягваць большасць санкцый у дачыненні да Беларусі

The EU member states will decide not to prolong most Belarus sanctions for strategic reasons despite the fact that numerous human rights problems still exist in the country, Euobserver reports.

The EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the future of Belarus sanctions at a meeting in Brussels on February 15. The decision is expected to be made in the afternoon.

The Council of the EU ‘will mention the possibility of positive development of bilateral relations with Belarus’ and ‘the progress that can be made in various spheres by means of expanding the communication channels’, the press service of the Council of the EU reported a few days ago. The Council ‘will express concern as regards the human rights situation in Belarus’ and ‘the future parliamentary elections’ and ‘will urge the Belarusian authorities to stick to the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations pronounced after the presidential election of 2015’, BelaPAN reports.
