Authorities in Brest ban picket to remember disappeared Yury Zakharanka

The Brest City Hall has rejected an application from Roman Kislyak, a local human rights activist, to mark on May 7 the 9th anniversary of the disappearance of Belarus's former interior minister and opposition member Yury Zakharanka.  The picket was expected to take place near the downtown Belarus cinema, but the authorities said that street was under reconstruction.

Kislyak told the Belapan news agency that he would appeal the city hall's decision, because the street was not closed for pedestrians.

Yury Zakharanka went missing in May 1999. His fate has remained unknown since the disappearance. Opposition politician Viktar Hanchar and businessman Anatol Krasouski disappeared in the same year. Journalist Dmitry Zavadsky also went missing without a trace.
