Center-right candidate Nicolas Sarkozy gathered 31.11 percent of the vote in the first round of the French presidential elections, according to the final results published on Monday morning, reports Interfax quoting BBC.
Socialist Segolene Royal, bidding to become the country's first female president, picked 25.84 percent of the votes. The two are set to run off after having defeated 10 other candidates.

Voter turnout was record-breaking in Sunday's ballot with almost 85 percent of voters coming to the polling stations, the highest number over the past 50 years.
