CEC: Starting criminal cases for fake signatures is still open question
The Central Election Commission does not know whether a criminal case for presenting fake signatures will be started.
The Belarusian CEC published information about the signatures presented by presidential contenders on September 1. Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s team presented 1 753 380 real signatures (out of 1 761 145), Syarhei Haidukevich’s– 139 877 (out of 140 735), Mikalai Ulahovich’s – 149 819 (159 805) andTatstsyana Karatkevich’s team – 105 278 (107 299).
The CEC found only 6 699 real signatures among the 130 404 signatures collected for Victar Tsyareshchanka. CEC chairperson Lidizya Yarmoshyna has not commented on the situation yet. The question of starting criminal cases for presenting fake signatures is still open.
CEC lawyer Alena Dzmuhaila told Euroradio:
“Regional commissions will check the documents before they are sent to us. The CEC has the right to start a criminal case for it but we have not seen the documents yet and it is too early to speak about it now.”
The CEC is planning to resister presidential candidates on September 10. There may be up to 4 candidates.
