Satellites to help track ticketless passengers on public transport in Minsk

The Minsk city authorities plan to launch a new automated system to control the payment of ride fares on public transport, Genadz Vyrko, the deputy chairman of the Minsk City Hall told the Belta news agency.
There are new technologies available that allow to use satellite navigation in order to track down the location of vehicles and the number of passengers, he said.

The state-of-the-art technologies also allow to control the payment of ride fares in the real-time mode. Virko noted a digital device installed on a bus would be part of the new system. The ticket will be replaced with a plastic card.

The tests of the new system are to commene in by the end of August 2007. During the tests, communication channels, technical solutions and software will be checked. The new system will be introduced gradually in order to avoide inconviniences for passengers. The government is yet to take a final decision on the transformation to a new public transport payment system.
