Declaration of Belarusian sovereignty adopted 20 years ago

The Supreme Council of BSSR followed the other republics after the failure of the coup d’etat in Moscow and decided to secure the country’s independence. The active minority – BPF opposition in the Parliament – managed to achieve it from the pro-communist majority.
The declaration of the state sovereignty of BSSR was adopted on July 27, 1990. However, it came into real power only in August 1991. Our country became independent on that day. BSSR changed the state symbols and its name three weeks later – on September 19.
