New Saints to be honored in Vitsebsk

Celebrations devoted to the canonization of new Orthodox Christian Church's saints -- Mikalay Akalovich and Uladzimir Yelyaneuski -- are today to take place in Vitsebsk. Tonight, Metropolitan Philareth and bishops will hold services in the churches in Vitsebsk. On Sunday, the Mark Men's Monastery will host festivities to honor the new Saints. In 1920-30s, Priest Mikalay Akalovich was active to prevent a split within the chrch and also struggled to save people when the church's valuables were seized by the Soviet government.

The priest was numerously arrested on charges of anti-Soviet propaganda. Uladzimir Yelyaneuski served as a lawyer, but was known as a devout believer and human rights defender. He was repressed by the Soviet government for his active part in the religious affairs. The two were rehabilitated only at the end of 1980s, reports ERB correspondent Yadviga Stasheuskaya in Vitsebsk.
