Medics sentenced to prison terms for wrong diagnosis in Homel

A patient in the eastern Belarusian city of Homel died after doctors put a wrong diagnosis. A local court sentenced the medics to prison tearms, reports ONT television channel. If none of the sides appeals the ruling, it will be the first case in Belarus when medics are prosecuted for unqualified actions.

The story began when an ambulance rushed the patient with the Mellary-Weise syndrome accompanied with lungs bleeding.

The patient deteriorated every day.

Only after four days, other doctors from a different department managed to identify the correct diagnosis -- the lungs gangrene, but it was too late.

The parents of the deaseased sued the doctor and the nurse that initially proposed a wrong diagnosis. The local court yesterday found both of them guilty.

The doctor was sentenced to three years of restricted freedom and the nurse received 2.5 years. The both would also be banned from working in the healthcare sector for three more years.
