Latvia to step up controls at border with Belarus due to Waffen SS veterans

Latvia will have its border with Belarus under the total cotrol beginning from March 12, reports Baltinfo. The Latvian border guards will boost controls at the Silene-Urbany border post. All the vehicles entering Latvia will be inspected. The Belarusian border guards also advise the tourists to cross border in the next week through Grygarauschyna border post, some 100 km off the Silene-Urbany crossing point.

Belarus' border control officials have declined a comment on the actions of Latvia. But the unnamed source said the border controls were to be stepped up because of the ban by the Latvian authorities to stage a traditional rally of Latvian veterans of the Nazi troops on March 16.

Latvian officials fear that destructive elements can penetrate the country from other countries and wish to boost security and border controls.
