General prosecutor's office refuses to start case upon Mikhalevich's claim

The ex-presidential candidate Ales Mikhalevich is named in the December 19 "mass disturbances" case as an accused. He was arrested on December 20 , at night. He was released on recognizance from the KGB detention center on February 19.

Mikhalevich summoned a press-conference on February 28 and announced that he had been released upon agreement to become a KGB agent. According to the politician, he was forced to take such a step due to "horrible confinement conditions in the KGB detention center, which can be considered as tortures".

Mikhalevich filed a corresponding claim to the General prosecutor's office asking to "conduct checking and to stop violence" on that very day.

Mikhalevich was summoned to the General prosecutor's office for explanations on March 17. However, the ex-presidential candidate had been abroad by then, in spite of the non-leave obligation. It became known later that Mikhalevich obtained political refuge in the Czech Republic.
