Former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga may head EU

The European Schuman fund studying and analyzing public opinion in the European Union  has suggested adding a former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga  “on the short list” alongside with four male politicians because of her high rating. The Treaty of Lisbon provides for staff innovations in the EU. Two seats are vacant now – the position of the EU President and of the head of European diplomats. The former Foreign Minister of Austria Ursula Plasnik is running for the latter position.

According to the European Women's Lobby, it is time Europe put an end to gender discrimination: women make up 52% of the population but occupy from 3 to 20 percent of positions in EU administrative institutions.

Women will get 3 of the 27 seats in the new European Commission although they used to have 9, reports euronews.net.
