Court tells oppositionist's mother she can't get restored at work

The Vitsebsk Regional Court has ruled to reject a request by Tatsiana Seviarynets, the mother of Pavel Seviarynets, a youth opposition leader, to restore her employment.  In April 2007, she was fired from a Vitsebsk school where she worked as the Russian language and literature teacher.

Formally, she was fired on the grounds of not showing up at her working place. However, Tatsiana Seviarynets was officially (in a written form) cleared by the school administrator to be off at her own cost due to family reasons.

The court ignored Mrs. Seviarynets's arguments, supported by the relevant articles in the Belarus laws, as well as the facts that could have helped the former teacher get her job back.

"The ruling by the Vitsebk court confirms once again that laws do not work in this country," Tatsiana Seviarynets commented in an interview with BelaPAN. The woman said she would appeal the ruling in a higher court.
