British gay bars boycott Russian vodka

Several London and Manchester gay bars and clubs run by the influential company G-A-Y Group have joined the boycott, The Independent reports.

The vodka boycott was supported b y U.S. And Canadian gay bars earlier, Gazeta.ru notes. The action was initiated by American writer Dan Savage.  He urged to express “solidarity with Russian gays and their allies”.

One of the founders and owner of G-A-Y Group Jeremy Joseph has demanded that retail networks (like Tesco and Sainsbury) should join the action.

In its turn, one of the boycotted brands has started a PR-campaign “to dissociate itself” from the Russian government. Representative of the SPI Group Val Mendeleyev stressed that “vodka Stloichnaya has always been and will continue to be a friend of the LGBT community”.
