Belarus, Latvia may ink visa-free travel deal in August

Under the agreement, Belarusians from areas next to the border will be allowed to visit Daugavpils, while Latvians can travel freely to three districts in Belarus.
This statement was issued by Aleh Andreyeu, head of the consular department at the Belarusian embassy in Riga:

“We have agreed on all the issues with the Lithuanian side. It seems there are no serious disagreements in our positions. I think the agreement could be signed this month, he said.

Belarus and Latvia planned to sign this agreement earlier, but it was delayed, because Belarus borders not only Latvia, but also the European Union. Therefore, a green light was to be given first by Brussels. Now, it is confirmed that Daugavpils is eligible for visa-free travel for residents of the trans-border area.

The agreement will apply to three districts in Belarus, said Aleh Andreyeu..

A special permit will given to eligibale residents for one to five years. The Belarusian Consulate noted an applicant would be expected to explain the goals of his visits when processing the documents at the embassy.

On February 12, Belarus and Poland signed the similar agreement which stipulates a visa-free travel for residents of the areas next to the border. However, the deal is yet to be ratified by the parliaments ib the both countries. Belarus is also to sign such an agreement with Lithuania soon.
