Yarmoshyna: Kondrus’ arrest for Square riots is justified

Ярмошына: Арышт Кондруся за падзеі на Плошчы апраўданы

The arrest of Uladzimir Kondrus, a new person involved in “the Square case” is justified, CEC chairperson Lidziya Yarmoshyna thinks. He was detained in June for participating in the protest action in the centre of Minsk after the announcement of the presidential election results in 2010.

“I have been asked about the detention of one of the participants of December 2010 events. He was found by accident. His arrest is being discussed on the Internet a lot. I ask: ‘Aren’t people doing things that are close to terrorism get punished in Europe?’  ‘This is not terrorism,’ they reply to me,” Lidziya Yarmoshyna said on STV.

“Kondrus did not have time to take me hostage. He simply broke a window in the House of the Government and tried to rush into the building. If he had taken hostages, the situation would have been different,” the CEC chairperson noted.

Rudzensk inhabitant Uladzimir Kondrus was detained on June 14, 2016. He is accused of the violation of part 2 of article 293 of the Criminal Code (‘mass riots’). Kondrus is on a hunger strike at Minsk detention centre #1. He is protesting against the arrest, Interfax.by reports.

Human rights defenders consider him to be a political prisoner.
