Suzdaltsev: Belarus reckons EAEU threatens Lukashenka’s power

Belarusian ex-PM and current head of the Council of the Republic Mihail Myasnikovich made an unexpected statement on April 23. The single currency in the Eurasian Economic Union is a threat to Belarus’ sovereignty, he said. The currency integration can be conducted only after the terms of management are equal for all the EAEU member states, he believes.

Euroradio has asked Moscow political scientist Andrei Suzdaltsev to comment on Myasnikovich’s words.

Currency integration and a currency union are the first steps on the way to political integration. The reforms that will have to be made in the union will inevitably lead to the change of power. Thus, Myasnikovich’s words reflect the real anxiety of the Belarusian government, Suzdaltsev believes.

Suzdaltsev: "Myasnikovich is worried about the necessity to conduct urgent reforms is we create a currency union. Structural reforms will lead to the change of the political vector and power in Belarus. It means that the EAEU really threatens Lukashenka’s power.”

Thus, there is no sense in waiting for the single currency to be introduced in the EAEU member states anytime soon, the political scientist believes. Furthermore, Russia will be involved in the creation of the single currency zone most of all while Belarus and Kazakhstan will get dividends from it, Suzdaltsev said.
