Silent detentions: police hinder journalists’ work (PHOTO)

work.

Journalists were detained during 6 out of the 8 “silent” protest actions in Belarus. Policemen’s attitude kept getting worse with every action.

For example, journalists “were driven” to the District Department of the Interior with plainclothes strangers on June 15. And that was it! However, they were pushed into police vans and delivered to the detention centre in Akrestsina Street on July 3. Tear gas was used against journalists in Railway Square. This is the way dangerous criminals are treated in civilized countries. Representatives of the press who always keep the order are never treated like that.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists has presented the following statistics. 77 Belarusian and foreign journalists accredited in the country were detained at 8 “silent” protest actions in Belarus. The number of detentions keeps increasing: 9 and 8 journalists were detained on June 15 and 22. 12 – on June 29, 20 – on July 3 and 28 – on July 6.

Passers-by call journalists “defenders” and “guardian angels” on Wednesdays: photo and video cameras can often stop violent detentions. However, journalists get beaten and offended rather often.
