Human rights defender urges lawyers to go on strike

Human rights activists and head of the centre “Legal assistance for the population” (Kiev, Ukraine) Oleg Volchak is urging lawyers to go on strike - otherwise, independent advocacy in Belarus will be eliminated.

"We are urging lawyers to express solidarity and to ask the Minister of Justice to stop exercising pressure on the Bar. It would be good if all Belarusian lawyers went on strike and stopped working. I think the authorities would pay attention to lawyer’s problems. Otherwise, the repressive machinery won’t stop and lawyers will continue being expelled from the Bar. One can clearly see that there is no independent legal profession in the country”, - claimed Oleg Volchak, informs “Belarusian Partisan”.
