EU to create "fund for support of democracy" in neighbouring countries
The fund will be aimed at the Belarusian democratic forces in the first place.
This has been informed by EUObserver,
which writes about the activity of the EU's structures.
The
suggestion to create such a fund was made by Poland, when it headed the EU in
the second half of 2011. The structure will disseminate grants between the
civil and political movements, youth groups, media, funds and educational
organizations. The fund will be financed by donations of the EU member states.
It is planned that it will start working already this year.
It
is also planned to introduce a new position in the framework of the EU - EU
Special Commissioner on Human Rights. It is expected that the EU High
Representative on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton will
suggest a candidate for this new position already within this week.
