Makei to tell Russian Foreign Minister about Riga summit

Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makei will visit Russia on June 7 and 8. He has been invited there by his counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The two sides will discuss the topical issues on the bilateral and international agenda, RIA Novosti reports.

The Ministers are planning to discuss the prospects of Belarus and Russia’s relations with the European Union and the United States. Makei will tell his Russian counterpart about the Eastern Partnership summit held in Riga in May. The Russian MFA had called the summit ‘anti-Russian’ even before it started.

Such negotiations are a normal practice for Belarus and Russia, deputy director of the CIS Institute Uladzimir Zharyhin said. The Russian MFA used to inform Belarus about the results of G-8 meetings when Russia was a member of the Great Eight.

Makei and Lavrov will also discuss the realization of the programme of coordinated actions in the foreign policy of the Union State in 2014-2015. The Ministers will also consider the execution of the plan of Belarusian-Russian initiatives dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Furthermore, they will talk about the interaction of Belarus and Russia in the UN. This organization will mark its 70th anniversary this year.
