Lukashenka: No Russian airbase in Belarus

Лукашэнка: Расійскай авіябазы ў Беларусі не будзе

There has been no discussion about the deployment of a Russian air base in Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said when visiting a newly-built stretch of Minsk Ring Road-2.

“I have been watching our opposition lamenting over the allocation of a Russian air base in Belarus lately. I do not know anything about it. I do not know anything about the person who has to make the decision either,” Lukashenka claimed.

“We do not need an air base now. We need some armaments and I openly told Putin and Medvedev about it,” Lukashenka stressed.

“There is a top secret plan” in case of an armed conflict but the plan stakes on the Belarusian Army, the Belarusian leader announced.

“We need airplanes, not air bases. We have excellent pilots and a good military and civilian school. Why would I need a base? Why would I need foreign planes and pilots here? What will our own pilots do?” Lukashenka said.

He feels ‘offended to some extent’ due to the Russian authorities giving such information to mass media, BELTA quotes the President.
