The Daily Telegraph: Daugavpils – ‘Latvian Crimea’?

The Baltic States are worried about their future due to the events in Crimea, the British edition wrote. Daugavpils is 100 km away from the Russian border, 30– from Belarusian and 25 – from the Lithuanian border. This Latvian city is the only city in the EU where most inhabitants speak Russian.

A reporter of The Daily Telegraph talked to Daugavpils inhabitants and found out that some of them did not mind the city joining Russia. They complained that “the EU did not fulfill its commitments”.

There was a Belarusian grammar school and Belarusian movement in Daugavpils (Dvinsk) in the 1920s. However, most local Belarusian activists were repressed by the Soviet authorities or had to emigrate later.
