Confiscation cars in Belarus

The police detained 20 drunken drivers on November 3 in Minsk, ten days after Belarus approved tougher fines and confiscation of cars as punishment.

It has happened after the new law came into power.

All of them were stopped for drunken driving for the first time and could be allowed to keep their cars.

The incident happened at 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 24.

The detained drunk drivers will be punished with a fine of up to Br13 million (around 1000 EUR), under a newly enforced more stringent regulation.

The drunk drivers that got caught by the traffic police twice in a year will see their cars confiscated, effective from October 24.

The incident occurred on the evening of October 1. Driving inspectors had to pursue the Hyundai driver because he wouldn’t stop.

A new legislation that aims to impound private vehicles for drunk driving was approved by the upper house of parliament on June 28.

Prosecutor General Alyaksandr Kanyuk tells the members of the Council of Republic the measure could help curb drunk driving in Belarus.
