USA reminds Minsk about human rights on Square-2010 anniversary

The United States has reminded Belarus about the necessity of observation of the human rights. It is particularly important in light of the upcoming 2015 presidential elections, spokesperson for the United States Department of State Jen Psaki announced. The statement was distributed on the anniversary of the brutal dispersal of the mass demonstration in Minsk on December 19, 2010. Hundreds of people were detained back then.

"We remember those who remain wrongly imprisoned and call for the immediate and unconditional release of all Belarusian political prisoners and the complete respect for their political and civil rights,” tut.by quotes the spokesperson for the United States Department of State.

There are 5 political prisoners in Belarus now. Ex-presidential candidate Mikola Statkevich is one of them.

The USA urges Belarus ‘to honor the U.S.-Belarus December 2010 joint statement which acknowledges that enhanced respect for democracy and human rights and remains essential to the progress of Belarus and its citizens, and is central to improving bilateral relations’, Psaki noted.

“Increased respect for democracy and human rights will also boost prosperity and economic growth, thus strengthening Belarusian sovereignty and independence, which the United States unequivocally and firmly supports,” Jen Psaki claimed.
