Potential candidates summoned to police for singing at pickets in Vitsebsk

Патэнцыйных кандыдатаў у Віцебску выклікаюць у міліцыю за спевы на пікеце

Tatstsyana Sevyarynets, Alena Shabunya and Heorhi Stankevich have been summoned to Vitebsk October District Department of the Interior. Policemen want to listen to their explanations concerning a signature collection picket held on July 27.

Activists were signing at the picket near the Summer Amphitheatre, the human rights website Viasna reports. In particular, they sang the anthem Strong God. Furthermore, the activists were congratulating passers-by on the anniversary of the adoption of Belarus’ sovereignty declaration.

They did not violate the order, the activists think. The Election Code does not mention anything that is allowed or forbidden at signature collection pickets. The police are exercising psychological pressure on them, they said.
