Ministry of Energy confirms contingency at Astravets NPP

Мінэнерга пацвердзіла пазаштатную сітуацыю на будаўніцтве АЭС

The Ministry of Energy has admitted that a contingency occurred at the building site of the Belarusian NPP.

Information about the contingency at Atsravets NPP appeared in mass media on the evening of July 25. It was reported that the reactor weighing 330 tons collapsed from the height of 2-4 metres on July 10. The area was encircled and guarded, mass media reported.

"According to the prime contractor Atombudexpart, the contingency occurred when the reactor was being moved horizontally,” the website of the Ministry of Energy reports.

Belarus has demanded ‘all the necessary documents and information’ from the prime contractor. The situation is being analyzed, the Ministry of Energy reports.  Decisions will be made in order to provide the safety of the NPP, the Ministry representatives noted.

The NPP representatives refused to comment of the incident and said that it was a rumour on July 26, Euroradio reported.

The prime contractor (group of companies ASE) had announced that the information about the contingency was not true a few hours before the Ministry of Energy commented on it.
