EU prolongs Russia sanctions for six months

The EU Ministers met in Brussels and decided to prolong the existing Russia sanctions imposed on Russian officials and pro-Russian separatists for six months, BBC reports.

It was done in connection with the military activities in East Ukraine and Russia’s participation in them.

The decision must be approved at a summit of the EU leaders on February 12. Additional financial sanctions that have to be discussed together with the United States will also be considered at the summit.

The EU forbade persons connected with Russia’s aggression in Crimea to enter its territory and froze their assets in March 2014.

Appeals to enhance pressure on Russia appeared after last weekend’s attack on Mariupol when 30 peaceful citizens were killed and dozens were injured. The shooting was done by pro-Russia militants, foreign observers believe.
