Belarus demands extradition of Orthodox priest from Ukraine

Lviv Shevchenko District Court has put Belarusian citizen and Ukrainian Orthodox priest Syarhei Nyahames (Horbik) under a house arrest.

The court decided it on May 15, interfax.by reports. Lviv Oblast Office of the Public Prosecutor even wanted to arrest Horbik.

Belarus demands to extradite the priest. He is accused of fraud at home and is wanted by the Interpol.

The accusations are political and connected with his civil activities and criticism of the Belarusian regime, Horbik said.

The problems started after the publication of his book about anti-Soviet partisans Belarusian Resistance in 2006. Representatives of the Belarusian authorities visited him in Ukraine after that. They said that they wanted to hear his evidence in a case where he was a witness. However, he turned into a suspect a few years later, Horbik said. He was announced wanted in Belarus after he had returned from East Ukraine where he had been a volunteer.
