Barack Obama threatens Russia with new sanctions

“The USA is not taking military action to solve the Ukrainian problem,” Reuters quotes Obama. “There is not going to be any confrontation with Russia”, the American President announced at a briefing.

The separatists in East Ukraine are not ordinary local inhabitants, they are ‘backed, trained, armed, financed by Russia’, Obama noted.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will visit Washington in September, the American President said. Obama will take part in the NATO summit in Wales next week, RBK notes. New measures that may be taken against Russia will be discussed there. He has already discussed the events in Ukraine with German Chancellor Angela Merkel by phone, Obama noted. The U.S. and German leaders concluded that the USA and EU should discuss new sanctions that could be imposed on Russia, the White House press service reported later.

Spokesperson for the United States Department of State Jen Psaki already claimed that the USA was considering new sanctions to impose on Russia. The strengthening of sanctions has been ‘the most effective and the best tool’ so far, she noted.
